By EMS Deputy Chief Lukas Jenkins
October 14, 2017

At 8:19 AM on Saturday, October 14th, 2017, Washington Hose EMS, the Coatesville Fire Department, and the VA Fire Department were dispatched to an auto accident reported serious at N 6th Ave and Merchant St. On duty crews were unaware of the surprise MCI drill that has been in the works and kept a secret for over a year.

The incident had two RV's and a van with entrapment in the RV on its side. There were a total of 11 patients to be rescued, treated, and transported. One patient was critical with two femur fractures and an evisceration (open wound to the abdomen with partial bowels exposed.) JeffSTAT was grounded due to weather so the critical patient was transported by ground. All patients were transported to BWH ER for secondary triage and to help them complete a multi agency drill.

All injuries were simulated with wearable wounds from Techline Trauma located in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.

The two retired RVs were donated by The Philadelphia Eagles Charitable Foundation for the MCI drill. Since 1996 the Eagles Eye Mobile has made comprehensive vision care accessible to under-insured and uninsured children in the Greater Philadelphia area. The RVs provided a unique training opportunity for rescue and EMS personnel.

The crews did a great job and learned a lot. Thanks to everyones help in making the drill successful. We look forward to more unique training opportunities in the future.

Units: Ambulance 41-2, Ambulance 41-3, Ambulance 41-4, 41-20, 41-21, 41-22, 41-23

Mutual Aid: CFD, Deputy 43, Battalion 41, VAFD, MEDIC 93, JeffSTAT, and BWH
